Exquisite Corpse
PRIMER PROJECT | FLOOR, WALL, CEILING
SEP 2020

A ‘game’ playing with fundamental elements of interior design – floor, wall and ceiling.

Exquisite Corpse is a collaborative drawing approach first used by surrealist artists to create bizarre and intuitive drawings. In our exquisite corpse project, each one will be designated an element (floor/wall/ceiling) and a key word to do the design, and then he will hand it to the next group member. Finally the composition will become a three-dimensional ‘exquisite corpse’.

It was such a pleasure for me to collaborate with Chu Guo and Panagiota Angelidou in this project.

COARSE CEILING ・ Chu
We usually feel the ceiling only by visual sense. But how we feel the 'coarse' texture should be by touch. Thus, this ceiling is 'reversed', being touchable, with the surface in palm tree fiber, which is very rough, same with the Tawashi brush.
ELECTRIC WALL ・ Panagiota
Walls: Enclose –> Protect –> Barrier -> Double faced –> Translucent -> Wire grid
Electricity: Produce energy -> Cables

MEATY FLOOR ・ Yaqi
“Cow-beef”, “sheep-mutton”, “pig-pork”...We human “meatify” things, which means to take things from nature to benefit ourselves. Following this way, “Tree-wood” can also be seen as a kind of “meatify”. Human exploit, Human take trees from nature to build layers and layers of floors. The man in the image is Atlas, a figure in Greek mythology who was condemned to hold the Earth, here as a symbol of human power.
NUMERICAL CEILING ・ Panagiota
Numerical: Relating to or expressed as a number or numbers. Numbers -> Shapes
Numerical Equation-> Addition (Triangles) -> 2+2=4 (Total -> Square)
RUBBERY WALL ・ Yaqi
Wall can be used to create limitation in space, while rubber is elastic. So when these two elements come together, I want to use them to create some elastic limitation. (material: rubber, from dishwashing gloves)
BLACK FLOOR ・ Chu
A floor is a flat, continuous surface. Also, joint surfaces could constitute a floor. This floor is made by timber cubes with only one surface be burnt into charcoal color, and is arranged in a metal tray. You could also play with the cubes, turn their orientation so this floor would also become a color puzzle.

WOOLY CEILING ・ Yaqi
Ceiling is usually in a high position, we look up to it, we can’t touch it. Such experience makes me think of things like hope, dream, reverie, heaven ... Wool is soft, warm, and can be woven. I made this woven wooly ceiling, which is blowing in the wind like reverie thoughts. I often wear thin wooly shirts in early spring, when it is a bit cold but not that cold. Cherry blossoms bloom in early spring, and their petals also often blow in the wind.
FOLDED WALL ・ Chu
Wall is usually an element controls privacy. Lower part of the walls could be folded towards outside, while the upper part is folded inside. The privacy of this space is diversified by the way these walls is folded like a folding screen.
PATTERNED FLOOR ・ Panagiota
Floor -> Surface -> Points -> Materia -> Straws Pattern -> Repeated way in architecture -> Tiles
