INHABITATIONS PROJECT | A ‘RETREAT’

MAR - MAY 2021

In today’s over digitalised world, physical reading is threatened. However, bookstores are far more than just places for purchasing books – they are the space for free opinions, creativity and intellectual communication... All of them are vital to today’s society. To save bookstore culture, I decided to reuse the overlook hotel to build a retreat - a physical reading utopia.

Spatial Strategy

The main design aim of RRR is to let the community reading atmosphere run though the whole retreat, but also to separate necessary zones for different activities. The major intervention is to split the space of the original Gold Room (two-story high) and insert a central circulation staircase where daily encounter happens. Public and private space is separated by green atriums.

Materiality

The main consideration of the second part of this project is 'materiality'. I selected pine wood and stone form the original site, and brought in recycle paper from my narrative. The selection is intended to bring a sense of natural touch into the retreat, escaping from the digital life.
